MCDONALD'S ANALYTICS. HOW TO EASILY CONTROL A MAJOR FRANCHISE FROM HOME
Businesses in general but specifically franchises are major collectors of large amounts of data. Usually these businesses deal with a lot of daily customers in many locations, which translates in more data than their owners can take notice of.
Therefore, the importance of processing and analysing data figures correctly and quickly can translate into many real advantages for the success and efficiency of a business in many ways, not just direct sales but also knowing the profile of clients, their chosen products, predictions based on accumulated data, goals analysis, etc.
Also, having the best tools to “sell” the franchise and demo in real-time the figures that one was previously only showing in the paper, can facilitate exponentially the growing of the franchise network and the number of licensed franchises.
As the franchise business is getting more competitive, every company is always looking out for added-value and advantages. The use and analysis of big data is starting to catch the eye of these companies who see this process with increased importance.
We were given a challenge, proposed by McDonald’s Portugal, which has a growing network of more than 100 restaurants and their IT network was registering daily a wide range of data from all of those locations.
They were in need for an innovative visual interface that could quickly translate and interpret all that data and present it in a visually appealing and intuitive way. The requirements of the system required the processing of all the data from the chain, comparison with the goals of each franchise, establishment of franchise rankings and security concerns. The tool had to be deployed in iPads so that managers could quickly run the numbers when going to locations. Security-wise, the system had to make use of the generation of unique PIN keys for the managers to login and log every step. Apart from the large amount of data, this information was also quite sensitive and confidential.
Our team was able to implement the app for iPhone and iPad devices in just 6 weeks, presenting real-time dynamic graphics (pie charts and line charts) rankings and dashboard.
In fact, dashboard and visual tools were designed in appealing and efficient ways (graphic generation and manipulation can be pretty heavy in mobile devices and need to be developed properly in order not to frustrate the user). It helps managers quickly become more receptive in the adoption of these kind of analytics tools and not being reticent to make use of large data and technology.
THE IMPLEMENTATION OF DASHBOARDS AND VISUAL TOOLS MAKES BUSINESS MANAGERS MORE RECEPTIVE TO THE USE ANALYTIC TOOLS. THIS IMPROVES THEIR WORK AND BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT
As the app was rolled-out internally, it was quickly praised and adopted by the managers as the learning curve was also quite lean.
